With so much attention on Marbella and its immediate surroundings, one can sometimes forget that there are some excellent alternatives on either side of this glamorous resort town. Estepona is a prime example right now, an upcoming town with an inspirational mayor, José María García Urbano, who has invested in renovating the charming historic town centre, upgrading infrastructure, introducing public art, inaugurating parks and green zones, as well as new sports facilities, attractions and a brand new hospital for the area.

As a result, Estepona is fast catching up with Marbella in desirability terms, but it has a character of its own. Offering a somewhat more relaxed and authentically Andalusian ambience 15 minutes west of Marbella and Puerto Banús, it is backed by beautiful mountain ranges and undulating countryside, and fronting a broad, sweeping shoreline with large sandy beaches and sheltered coves. Known as the New Golden Mile, the area between Marbella and Sotogrande is developing into an increasingly popular spot for discerning holidaymakers and property buyers.

Modern luxury and traditional charm
The town of Estepona and its surroundings are blossoming, with new restaurants, cafés, beach clubs and shops mingling with those that have always been here. It’s a lively, languid mix of modern and traditional, and this is also reflected in the range of property for sale in Estepona, which extends from renovated town centre homes or indeed renovation projects full of potential, to modern and contemporary villas, apartments, penthouses and townhouses in the areas just west and east of the urban area.

The eastern part, which lies between Estepona and San Pedro Alcántara/Guadalmina is known as the New Golden Mile, and encompasses residential areas and country clubs such as Los Flamingos, El Paraíso, Atalaya, Benamara, Costalita and Selwo Park. These New Golden Mile properties can vary from country style villas and rustic apartment complexes to frontline beach penthouses and stunning beachfront villas with views across the Mediterranean. On the west side there is the up-and-coming zone near the Estepona marina, where luxurious projects such as Les Rivages, The Edge and The Island Estepona are creating a luxurious beachfront address.

Add the spa resort facilities of several luxurious hotels and the golf courses of Estepona Golf and Valle Romano, and this is an area full of opportunity for end buyers and investors alike. Choose from stylish modern villas with golf views in Valle Romano, tastefully renovated beachfront villas and those with lots of potential to modernise, spacious family townhouses or charming apartment complexes surrounded by greenery. You will also love the modern comforts and open-plan style of new off-plan apartments and penthouses in the area, many with panoramic rooftop pools and spa areas.
