The New Golden Mile is an area that roughly runs from Guadalmina on the western edges of Marbella municipality to Estepona. It may have borrowed its name from the original Marbella Golden Mile, but it is a distinct and interesting collection of communities in its own right and has been a popular residential area for many years

With so much of the focus in Marbella on Puerto Banús, La Zagaleta and the Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucía, there is an area that is sometimes a little overlooked yet highly popular with visitors and residents alike. In fact, Marbella East – the area extending from Río Real just east of Marbella town and Calahonda – is becoming increasingly fashionable.

Marbella is renowned for such luxury country clubs as La Zagaleta and El Madroñal, but these luxurious hillside estates in the foothills close to Marbella are not the only exclusive addresses of their kind in the area.

San Pedro Alcántara, which locals simply call San Pedro, is one of the Costa del Sol’s great success stories. Just over two decades ago, this Spanish town was very much smaller than it is today and was separated from the beach by the N340 coastal road and a long stretch of uninhabited ground.

For many years, Nueva Andalucía has been the preferred destination for many visitors to the Costa del Sol, and particularly for those investing in permanent residences or holiday homes. As Marbella’s largest suburb, just west of the city centre and inland of Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía is home to a large number of permanent residents but also welcomes a significant number of holiday makers during the peak summer season.

For many the luxury marina of Puerto Banús is every bit as famous as Marbella itself. Since it was first opened in 1970 in the style of a Mediterranean village, Puerto Banús has become internationally renowned as a luxury destination rich in glamour and excitement – and it remains to this day a Marbella hot point that draws large numbers of people – including many celebrities – to its luxury beaches and venues.
